Hoy hace tres años que Coque e Ismael comenzaron el proyecto alquilando un pequeño terreno en Ogassa (Girona), imaginando que estarían años ahí, pero como bien sabéis al poco tiempo se quedó pequeño porque no podían decir que no a los casos que llegaban para ayudar a los demás animales.
Antes de instalarse en Ogassa ellos vivían en Dosrius (Barcelona), en una urbanización donde comenzaron a salvar vidas. Había gallinas, ocas,perros y gatos, pero llegó el caso de Palma, una cerda vietnamita que vivía en Valencia en una finca donde había 60 perros que de los cuales 30 murieron de hambre. También había 6 cerdos pero 3 de ellos fueron asesinados, así que se fueron en el coche que tenían hasta Valencia para poder salvar a uno de esos 3 cerdos que quedaban vivos.
Cuando llegaron a esa finca se les cayó el alma al suelo al ver en las terribles condiciones en las que vivían los animales. Cogieron a Palma e hicieron ese larguísimo viaje en coche con ella, lejos de aquel hombre que la trataba a palos.
A la semana de ser salvada Palma tuvo a 6 bebés, así que en ese momento fue cuando Coque e Ismael se plantearon adelantar el proyecto con el que soñaban crear, ya que no querían dar en adopción a los hijos de Palma y separarlos de su madre. Como vivían en una casa con poco terreno comenzaron la búsqueda de otro más grande donde poder empezar con el Santuario.
A día de hoy Santuario Gaia está en Camprodon (Girona), en un espacio protegido de la Alta Garrotxa. Los 260 animales que viven en el Santuario pueden disfrutar de un terreno de 23 hectáreas por el que pasan dos ríos.

TODAY WE CELEBRATE SANTUARIO GAIA THIRD ANNIVERSARY !
Three years ago today, Coque and Ismael founded the project when they rented a small plot of land in Ogassa (Girona). They thought they’d spend several years there, but as many of you are aware, they soon run out of space as they could not turn down the petitions to helps more animals
Before moving to Ogassa, they lived in a residential area in Dosrius (Barcelona) where they started to save lives. There were hens, geese, dogs and cats. Then they were notified about Palma’s case, a Vietnamese pig who lived in a house in Valencia with 60 dogs, of whom 30 had already died from starvation. There were 6 pigs too, but 3 of them were slaughtered. Ismael and Coque drove to Valencia to save one of the 3 pigs who were still alive.
When they arrived at the rural estate they were appalled by the terrible condition of the animals. They took Palma and drove back, far away from that man who used to beat her.
A week after her rescue, Palma gave birth to 6 babies. That was what made Coque and Ismael bring forward their dream project because neither they want to put Palma’s babies in adoption nor separate them from their mum. Their current house didn’t have enough space to house them all so they started the search for a bigger one where the Sanctuary could be founded.
Today, Santuario Gaia is located in Camprodon (Girona), within a protected area in Alta Garrotxa. The 260 animals who live in the Sanctuary can enjoy a 23 hectares land crossed by two rivers.
